New and more efficient aircraft types will be necessary to reduce emissions from the aviation industry. In its Aviation Outlook 2050, EUROCONTROL has forecasted the future mix of aircraft for 2035 and 2050, as share of expected number of flights.
In the base scenario, EUROCONTROL expect that by 2035 evolutionary aircraft (more efficient new generations of conventional aircraft), will make up almost two thirds of all passenger flights, increasing further to 2050. Revolutionary aircraft, such as hybrid, electric and hydrogen, will start to make inroads from 2035, and is expected to account for 8% of flights in 2050.
