Tax Trails: Four Decades of Declining Corporate Tax Rates

Since 1980, worldwide corporate income tax rates have dropped significantly, declining from an (unweighted) average of 40.1% in 1980 to 23.4% in 2022, according to the Tax Foundation’s report “Corporate Tax Rates around the World 2022”.

The report shows a convergence in tax rates over time, with rates between 20% and 25% becoming the most common. The below visual shows how the distribution of corporate tax rates has evolved over time. Hover over the individual dots to see country labels.

Regional analysis shows that rates between 1980 and 2022 have decreased the most in Europe (from 44.6% to 19.7%) with South America seeing the smallest decline (36.7% to 28.4%).
