193 million people worldwide experienced acute food insecurity in 2021, almost 40 million more than in 2020 and twice as many as compared to 2016, according to the Global Report on Food Crises. Rising food insecurity was primarily driven by conflict, economic shocks and weather extremes.
The report expects the situation to further deteriorate in 2022, in large part due to the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on global food, energy and fertilizer prices and supplies.
