Clean Energy Employment Rise Above Fossil Fuels

Clean energy employment is set to widen its lead over fossil fuel jobs in worldwide employment in 2023. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that the clean energy sector is set to employ over 36 million people worldwide in 2023, surpassing the 32 million within the fossil fuels sector.

By comparison, in 2019 the fossil fuel sector employed 33 million workers, with the clean energy sector employing 30 million.

The clean energy job surge is powered by robust investment in clean energy, significantly outstripping that of traditional fuels since the pandemic, the IEA said.

Chart notes:

  • The clean energy figure spans jobs in renewable power, efficiency technologies, and electric vehicles, amongst others, while fossil fuels cover oil, gas, coal, and related industries.
